Cases of monkeypox are currently appearing in a wide variety of European countries.
Monkeypox is currently spreading in many European countries. However, the risk of infection is likely to increase with festivals and open airs.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe sees the risk of further spread of monkeypox with upcoming festivals and large parties. “The potential for further transmission in Europe and elsewhere during the summer is high,” said a statement from WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri Kluge. But festivals and celebrations in the coming months offer an opportunity to raise awareness of the disease and strengthen protective behaviors among young, sexually active and mobile people, he said.
According to Kluge, investigations into the cases so far suggest that the outbreak was already underway in the WHO Europe Region in mid-April. It is the largest and most geographically widespread monkeypox outbreak ever reported outside the endemic areas in West and Central Africa, he said.
In the context of the lifting of Corona measures that had restricted travel and major events, rapid, increased transmission had occurred, he said. Although many cases to date have been linked to sexual activity, he said, it should not be forgotten that the virus can affect anyone.
